The Better Thailand
Why the Future Is in the Philippines—And Why Davao Is the Secret Capital of Freedom
When most Westerners dream of Southeast Asia, their minds drift lazily to the beaches of Phuket, the chaos of Bangkok, or the “digital nomad dream” of Chiang Mai. Thailand, for decades, has been the poster child for exotic escape—a place where the West meets the East in an intoxicating mix of cheap massages, neon nightlife, and bureaucratic headaches.
But something has changed.
Thailand, once the rebel’s paradise, has matured into a regulated, crowded, increasingly surveillance-heavy tourist factory. Visa rules change like the monsoon wind. Tax authorities are starting to sniff around. And everywhere you turn, there’s another European TikToker selling dropshipping dreams while sipping a matcha latte.
Meanwhile, quietly, calmly, the Philippines has opened its arms—not to influencers, but to those looking to build a life. A real life. One with dignity, simplicity, sun, and a surprising amount of structure. And within the Philippines, there’s one place that truly stands apart:
Davao City. Not Manila. Not Cebu. Davao.
Let me tell you why.
This Is Not a Drill: Davao Is Different
I’ll be honest—I haven’t lived in Davao myself. But I’ve helped clients move there. I’ve guided entrepreneurs, retirees, and families through the transition. And their experiences tell a consistent story.
When they first flew into Davao, they expected chaos. After all, Manila had prepared them for the worst: traffic jams that last half a day, taxi drivers who drive you in circles, the occasional sense of unease that something could go sideways.
But Davao?
Davao greeted them like a well-run tropical fortress.
Clean streets. Military-style discipline at checkpoints, but all delivered with the warmest Filipino smiles. No honking. No scams. No sleaze.
And yes, you’ll hear the name Duterte often. This was his hometown. Say what you will about him, but his legacy here is personal. Crime is down. Cleanliness is up. And if you ask a local why they feel safe letting their children play in the park after dark, you’ll get a simple answer: “Because we’re in Davao.”
It’s not a beach town. It’s not a party town. It’s a real town. A place for families, for builders, for entrepreneurs who want to get things done.
Visas in Davao: As Easy As a Morning Mango Shake
Compare it to Thailand, and the difference becomes comical.
Thailand: Jump through hoops for an elite visa. Or a business visa that requires fake employees and monthly reporting. Or play the 30-day entry/visa run game like it’s still 2008.
Philippines? Just show up. You can stay 36 months straight on a tourist visa, no questions asked. Want something longer term? Get a retirement visa (SRRV) with almost zero age restrictions and no complicated paperwork. Or better yet, start a business, and you’ll get a proper working visa without needing to hire a room full of locals to justify your stay.
No games. No hidden agendas. Just a handshake and a smile at the Bureau of Immigration in Davao, where people actually help you.
Taxes: You Don’t Have to Hide in the Jungle
Thailand is catching up with the Western disease: regulation. They’ve signed up for OECD tax cooperation, including automatic exchange of information (CRS). That means if you’re a German, Swiss, or Austrian living in Bangkok, your local bank will soon be sending your details straight to your home country’s tax office.
The Philippines? Not yet.
No CRS reporting
No aggressive audits
No overreach
If you structure things right (and we know how to do that), you can live beautifully in Davao and keep your tax situation clean, simple, and low.
You don’t need to open 15 offshore companies to stay safe here. You just need to understand the rules—and the Philippines has remarkably clear ones. Pay tax where due, declare what matters, and enjoy a level of legal flexibility that Thailand buried years ago under a pile of paperwork and paranoia.
No Language Barrier: Everyone Speaks… You
Try opening a company in Thailand. You’ll need a Thai partner on paper. Want to lease land or deal with city officials? Bring an interpreter. Want to resolve a dispute? Good luck.
In Davao, everyone speaks English. Not “we try” English. Real, fluent, polite English—spoken by government workers, taxi drivers, accountants, and even tricycle riders. Contracts are in English. Law is in English. You’ll understand the rules—and they’ll understand you.
This isn’t just a convenience. It’s a business advantage, a legal safeguard, and a cultural blessing.
A Different Kind of Warmth
Thais are famously polite. But Filipinos—especially in Mindanao—go beyond that. They welcome you as family.
In Davao, my clients were invited to weddings, funerals, Sunday barbecues, and random fishing trips just because they smiled at someone’s grandmother. The warmth is disarming, genuine, and infectious.
It’s a society that still believes in honor, family, and God. A place where people help each other out. Where “sir” and “ma’am” still mean something. Where men can be men without being ashamed, and women walk the streets without fear.
What You’ll Find in Davao—and Nowhere Else
1. Peace. Not just the absence of war—but peace. No nightlife frenzy, no scams, no police shaking you down. Just order.
2. Scale. Want to build something? Rent is cheap. Labor is abundant and educated. Regulations are stable. The city is big enough to be relevant but small enough to manage.
3. Safety. It’s the safest city in the Philippines. Full stop.
4. Nature. Mount Apo watches over the city like a slumbering guardian. In one weekend, you can surf, hike, dive, and still be home in time for mass on Sunday.
5. Cost of Living. Even Thailand can’t compete. You can live like royalty in Davao for less than a cramped condo in Sukhumvit.
Why Thailand Feels Tired—and the Philippines Feels New
I used to love Thailand. I still do. But it’s tired.
Tired of tourists. Tired of overdevelopment. Tired of its own success.
The Philippines is raw. It’s real. It hasn’t been Instagrammed to death.
Davao isn’t full of influencers selling you a dream they don’t live. It’s full of people—real people—making it work.
There’s less pretense. Less hustle. Less pre-packaged spirituality and more actual spirituality. People here don’t meditate because it’s trendy. They pray because they believe.
Final Thought: It’s Not for Everyone—and That’s the Point
You won’t find trendy coworking spaces with artisanal oat milk in every café. You won’t find Tinder dates who quote Alan Watts. And thank God for that.
What you will find is freedom. Safety. Warmth. Simplicity. And a legal framework that actually lets you live your life.
Thailand is still good—for a holiday.
But if you want to start over, build something real, and wake up every day feeling like you’ve outsmarted the system instead of submitting to it?
The better Thailand is in the Philippines. And the Philippines’ best-kept secret is Davao.
